Should you choose white or brown eggs?

When buying eggs, many people wonder whether brown eggs are healthier than white ones, especially because brown eggs often cost more. However, shell color is mainly determined by the hen’s breed and does not automatically indicate better nutrition, quality, or taste. Different chicken breeds produce eggs with white, brown, blue, or green shells, but these colors generally make little difference to what is inside.

Brown and white eggs contain similar amounts of protein, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. Their nutritional value depends more on the hen’s diet and living conditions than on shell color. Taste differences are also usually linked to freshness, feed, and cooking methods rather than whether the shell is brown or white.

The higher price of brown eggs often comes from production costs and marketing. Hens that lay brown eggs may require more feed, making their eggs more expensive to produce. Some sellers also promote brown eggs as more natural, but paying extra does not guarantee better quality or additional health benefits.

When choosing eggs, freshness and proper handling are far more important than appearance. Check the packaging date, follow storage instructions, and avoid eggs with cracked or damaged shells. Unusual odors can also indicate spoilage. Although some people recommend shaking an egg to test its freshness, this method is unreliable. Shell texture, color, and size cannot reliably prove that an egg is fresher or more nutritious.

Ultimately, both brown and white eggs can be healthy choices. Instead of paying attention to shell color, focus on freshness, safe storage, intact shells, and trustworthy sources. Choosing between brown and white eggs largely comes down to personal preference, availability, and price rather than significant nutritional differences.
