Doctors Warn About Sleeping on Your Right Side and What It May Mean for Your Health

Snoring happens when airflow is partially blocked during sleep, causing the tissues in the throat to vibrate. Several factors can make it worse, including excess body weight, allergies, nasal congestion, alcohol consumption, and sleeping position. Although snoring can affect sleep quality, changing how you sleep may help reduce it.

Sleeping on your side is generally better for reducing snoring than sleeping on your back. When you lie on your back, gravity can cause the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to move toward the airway, making breathing more difficult. Sleeping on either side may help keep the airway more open and reduce the vibrations responsible for snoring.

However, the right and left sides may offer different benefits. Sleeping on the right side may help some people snore less, but the left side is often recommended for those who experience acid reflux. This position may reduce the likelihood of stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus, helping prevent nighttime heartburn and throat irritation. Since reflux can contribute to coughing and worsen snoring, changing sleeping positions may improve comfort and sleep quality.

Other simple habits can also help reduce snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol before bedtime, treating nasal congestion, following a regular sleep schedule, and slightly elevating the head may improve nighttime breathing. Supportive pillows can also make side sleeping more comfortable. However, people with obstructive sleep apnea should not rely on sleeping position alone, as they may need medical treatment.

If snoring is accompanied by pauses in breathing, choking during sleep, morning headaches, or excessive daytime sleepiness, medical advice is important. These symptoms may indicate sleep apnea, which requires proper diagnosis. Ultimately, side sleeping may help reduce snoring, while sleeping on the left side may be particularly beneficial for people with acid reflux. The best position depends on individual comfort and underlying health conditions.
