Tiny Creatures In Your Berries

Seeing tiny white worms crawl out of strawberries after soaking them in salt water can be unpleasant, but it does not necessarily mean the fruit is unsafe to eat. These tiny creatures are likely fruit fly larvae, including those of the spotted wing drosophila, which lays eggs inside ripening fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cherries. The eggs develop into pale larvae that feed inside the fruit. Salt water may irritate them and cause them to come out, but this method cannot guarantee that every larva or egg has been removed.

**Are the Strawberries Safe to Eat?**

Finding a few larvae does not automatically mean you need to throw away all your strawberries. If the fruit is fresh, firm, and has no mold, unpleasant smell, or significant damage, the larvae themselves are not generally considered a major health risk. They are not human parasites, and accidentally swallowing a few is not known to cause significant harm. However, strawberries that are moldy, mushy, or starting to rot should always be discarded.

**How to Clean Strawberries Properly**

Although vinegar washes are often recommended online, there is no reliable evidence that they remove every larva, bacteria, or pesticide residue. A better approach is to keep strawberries refrigerated and dry, remove damaged or moldy pieces, and gently rinse the amount you plan to eat under clean running water.

If you have already eaten strawberries containing tiny larvae, there is generally no reason to panic. However, seek medical advice if you experience persistent vomiting, severe stomach pain, or fever. Finding these insects is an unpleasant reminder that they can occur naturally in outdoor-grown fruit, but careful inspection and proper washing can help you enjoy your strawberries safely.
