Why You Should Never Put Your Crockpot on the Stovetop

A slow cooker makes meal preparation easy. Simply add the ingredients, close the lid, select a setting, and let the food cook while you go about your day. However, some recipes require browning meat or sautéing onions first, which may tempt people to place the removable Crockpot directly on the stovetop. This can be a dangerous mistake because traditional slow cookers are not designed for direct burner heat.

Most slow cookers have two parts: a removable ceramic or stoneware crock that holds the food and an electrical heating base that provides gentle, controlled heat. A stovetop burner produces much more concentrated heat, which can damage the cooking vessel or electrical components. Never place the entire slow cooker on a stovetop burner.

One major risk is thermal shock, which happens when ceramic or stoneware experiences sudden or uneven temperature changes. The crock can crack or break, potentially spilling hot food and causing burns. Even if the removable pot looks strong, it does not automatically mean it is safe for stovetop cooking. As the article explains, “If the manufacturer doesn’t specifically approve stovetop use, don’t put the crock on a burner.” Some modern multi-function appliances allow stovetop cooking, but traditional models usually do not.

The safest way to brown meat or vegetables is to use a regular skillet. Cook the ingredients separately, then transfer them into the slow cooker and continue following the recipe. Oven use also depends on the specific model, so always check the manufacturer’s instructions before placing the crock inside an oven.

If you accidentally put your crock on a burner, turn off the heat and let it cool naturally. Avoid pouring cold water over a hot ceramic pot, as sudden temperature changes can cause cracking. Once cooled, check for visible damage and replace it if necessary. A simple skillet and a few extra minutes can prevent an expensive mistake and keep your kitchen safe.
